The range of latitudes throughout our production areas offer a wide choice for onion production. Bunching onion, short and intermediate day types up to 14 hours, can be grown in our areas where latitudes range from 34 degrees south to 47 degrees south. Our main centres for onion production are Griffith (34 degrees), Swan Hill (35 degrees) and Mount Gambier (38 degrees). The bunching onions and some of the short day onions can be grown by the seed to seed method, but the majority are produced by bulb to seed. Bulbs are lifted when mature and stored in dry conditions till the next growing season. Prior to being transplanted they are graded where off-types and diseased bulbs are removed.
All crops are transplanted from SPS nursery fields and hand harvesting, controlled drying and precision cleaning provides high quality seed.
